At night I see ripples on the ceiling Silent waves rolling over a silent beach A streetlight through blinds that could be something else but my mind keeps wandering back to the same things I cannot control like a beach being slowly washed away Sometimes at night I imagine fire I imagine a world burned down to ash because that is how this feels This slow dark lapping against the sides of time It feels like this is the end and me here in the middle being forced again into something I don't understand Something I know only as different Something that will change me Something that will change us There are shells on that beach at night Shells left washed clean to be added to a collection While others are ground to dust to fade into the sameness of every other grain of sand I see those waves and I know they are always there they never recede The people who understand are too lost in the darkness to feel anything but symbols of something else I close my eyes but sleep does not come
