Garbage Day

Life is ruined by the things we take apart.
The things we build aren’t built to last.
They are temporary things we use
to get ahead, move on, move up,
move away.

All this work and nothing to show for it.
Our debris tells tales that we cover up,
plow under, push aside to make room for more.

When we move, we shake off the dust,
leave a trail to be swept clean,
leave a pile at the curbside and wait
for someone else to carry it away.

We move on, move up, move ahead
so that we never have to see dirt again.
We leave people behind
to clean up the mess for us.
